Bored, John Williams entered the small foyer of Theater 24. As a journalist who wrote about cultural events in the city, he not only visited the top events, he also regularly visited the avant-garde scene, looking for interesting new, or even weird, performances that might be attractive to his readers. He had free admission and knew that he would almost always find a free seat in the auditorium. Quietly he crept into the small auditorium, took a seat in the last row, looked around, and it became clear to him that the performance would probably be bad because there were only a few spectators.

On the stage there were a chair, a table, and a mattress. The scenery consisted of two large dark abstract pictures in black-and-white and a torn curtain. A man on the podium was leading a loud, excited monologue until a young woman entered the scene and gave him a joint, which he had obviously been longing for. An elusive dialogue developed between two stoned people until they left the stage. John just shook his head, didn’t understand how such a nonsense could even find a place on a stage. He wanted to do a short interview with the director and then go home. That night he had seen four such futuristic performances and didn’t find any of them interesting. But for his article, he would like to have an interview with an author.

Backstage he found the director in a heated conversation with the young actress. John stopped a few meters away and waited until the man would be free for the interview.

“Ron, I’m not coming. I don’t want to play that shit anymore. Find someone else. I’m not available anymore,” the young actress told him very definitely.

“Ava, you can’t do this. We’re at the beginning of the season, and you’re playing the lead. You have to stay. You should learn the modern, radical direction in theater. The classical will soon be completely out of fashion, you’ll see. What we are doing here—this is the future of acting. Trust me.”

“The play is weak, and you know it. Wake up, Ron, before it’s too late and you’ve thrown your name away. You can’t count on me anymore. Thanks for the chance I got with you, even if it didn’t work. Good-bye.” She turned on her heel and marched resolutely to the exit.

John took a step toward Ron and introduced himself. Ron immediately agreed to an interview and explained for a while his ideas of a modern play, which should give the audience the freedom to shape the further development of the play in their imagination.

John thanked him and left as fast as he could. He knew he couldn’t write about that.

He strolled along the road to his MG, which was parked a few hundred meters away. It was a lukewarm late evening, and some people were still sitting outside restaurants and pubs, eating and drinking a beer. He noticed Ava sitting alone at a table in front of a beer.
